Phosphogypsum – From Waste to Inventory
IFA’s third and most comprehensive report on phosphogypsum (PG) use, From Waste to Inventory – The Business Case, marks a major step toward sustainable PG management. Spanning 248 pages, this unique report is divided into three key sections: Banking and Investment in Phosphogypsum for the Circular Economy (6 chapters), So, Phosphogypsum is Our Business (12 case studies), and Breaking Out (4 chapters).
With contributions from 28 companies and organizations across 18 countries, the report showcases a global shift in how PG is viewed and used. Industry leaders such as OCP, Mosaic Fertilizantes, and Ma’aden share valuable insights, and China, the world’s largest PG producer, is a central figure in the discussion. Together, contributors represent over 85% of the 245 million tons of PG generated annually.
The report advocates for reclassifying PG from a waste product to a valuable resource. It outlines how full utilization is possible even for major producers like China by 2035, underscoring PG's potential in a circular economy.
