Decarbonization Claims Guidebook for Fertilizer Use: Nitrogen Stabilizers

Nitrogen fertilizer use is responsible for a significant share of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from agricultural soils. This Guidebook, developed through an IFA-supported project involving IFA member companies and external expert partners, explores how nitrogen stabilizers can help reduce fertilizer-related emissions while supporting productive and resilient agricultural systems. It provides a practical overview of greenhouse gas accounting principles, supply chain traceability, chain-of-custody models, product and project claims, and partnership structures that can help accelerate adoption of nitrogen stabilizers across the agrifood value chain. The Guidebook also examines how fertilizer companies, farmers, distributors, food companies, and inhibitor providers can collaborate to finance, implement, and credibly report emissions reductions, while aligning with evolving GHG accounting frameworks and avoiding double counting.
