Decarbonising the Phosphate and Potash Fertiliser Industry

A science-based approach to reducing emissions from fertiliser production and use.

Phosphate and potash fertilizers are essential to global food security, but their production is energy- and resource-intensive and faces increasing climate, policy, and market pressures. This roadmap is an EBRD initiative developed by ERM and Systemiq and in collaboration with IFA, drawing on extensive industry input through workshops, surveys, and stakeholder consultations. It explores practical pathways for the phosphate and potash fertilizer industry to significantly reduce emissions while maintaining food affordability, supply resilience, and agricultural productivity, and outlines the technologies, enabling conditions, and strategic actions needed to support the industry's transition toward net zero by 2050.
