Travertine Technologies, Inc.
Travertine Technologies, Inc. was founded in 2022 to deliver next-generation phosphate technology and eliminate phosphogypsum waste. Instead of burning sulfur, Travertine regenerates sulfuric acid electrochemically and uses it, in dilute form, to digest phosphate rock. Calcium from the rock is mineralized into calcium carbonate (with captured CO₂) or calcium hydroxide for use in low-carbon building materials and other industrial applications. Sulfuric acid is recovered and recycled within the plant, decoupling fertilizer production from the globally strained sulfur supply.
Travertine’s demonstration plant in Rochester, New York has accumulated over 3,000 operating hours recovering sulfuric acid from gypsum. Our pilot facilities have produced and delivered phosphoric acid qualified to food, technical, and LFP battery grade from a wide range of igneous and sedimentary phosphate ore compositions. Travertine’s first commercial facility is in development on the U.S. Gulf Coast, and the company is actively engaging with phosphate majors to deploy its technology at scale.
Your IFA Innovation Platform Profile
What collaboration are we looking for?
We are actively developing engagements with phosphate majors to position ourselves as a licensor of phosphate technology to reduce the industry’s structural vulnerability to sulfur cost and availability. We participated in the IFA sponsored Phosphate Industry Decarbonization Roadmap roundtable (30 March 2026). We would love to work with IFA to understand funding and financing opportunities for commercial projects to deliver low-waste, carbon-negative phosphoric acid.
What solutions and opportunities are we offering?
As a supplier of technology, we are eager to collaborate with new and incumbent fertilizer producers to deliver new projects around the world.

What is the IP status of your innovation(s)?
Travertine’s technology is protected by seven patent families covering the electrochemical salt-splitting process, its integration with phosphate rock digestion, and the resulting mineral (calcium carbonate, slaked lime) and phosphoric acid products. Eighteen applications are pending across the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Morocco. The foundational family is exclusively licensed from the University of California, Berkeley, where the process was originally developed; all subsequent families are owned by Travertine. The TRAVERTINE and TRAVERTINE PROCESS trademarks have been allowed by the USPTO.
What regulatory approvals are you currently seeking, or have already been achieved?
We are seeking permitting approvals for our first commercial plant in Louisiana, USA.
