Fertigation refers to the process of applying liquid or water-soluble fertilizers through irrigation systems to simultaneously supply plants with their daily water and nutrient needs for their specific growth stage, following the principles of 4R Nutrient Stewardship (using the right source at the right rate, time and place).
It is a proven technique that can help farmers to sustainably grow more food in a changing climate while radically reducing the use of precious resources such as water, using less fertilizer and minimizing nutrient losses to the environment.
By combining precise amounts of nutrients with small amounts of water, fertigation can produce up to 90% nutrient use efficiency (even 100% in high tech greenhouses) and up to 90% water use efficiency. As climate changes and water stress increases, there is a great opportunity to encourage the wider adoption of microirrigation and fertigation through education and incentives.
