Learning 4R Nutrient Stewardship online, through Fertilizer Canada’s eLearning platform

Fertilizer Canada - the association representing manufacturers, wholesale and retail distributors of nitrogen, phosphate, potash, and sulphur fertilizers in Canada - developed an eLearning platform to provide continuing education to fertilizer industry workers. Their goal is to provide formal training, and to be seen as a guide, an informer, and a reference to you and all your Canadian fertilizer needs.

Agriculture and agri-food professionals, farmers, agri-retailers, agronomists and crop advisors can choose from a variety of online courses, several of them free, on 4R Nutrient Stewardship and related topics, such as Canada’s Nitrous Oxide Emission Reduction Protocol (NERP). Some 4R courses are also tailored to specific regions, for instance Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. Students learn how to adopt and promote nutrient management practices to help increase production and profitability on the farm while enhancing environmental protection and improving sustainability. Many courses also offer professional credits, helping students pursue careers within the fertilizer industry. To date, 1,000 continuing education units have been earned by certified crop advisors on the eLearning platform. Getting started with Fertilizer Canada’s eLearning platform is simple. The only requirement is a computer with internet access. Registration on the site only takes a minute and users will have immediate access to the training modules. Students learn at their own pace and on their own schedule.

4,190 fertilizer workers around Canada have engaged on Fertilizer Canada’s eLearning portal. Clyde Graham, Senior Vice-President of Fertilizer Canada, commented on its benefits: “We have created unified, adaptable, and practical courses that positively impact our industry, our employees, and our communities. Our ultimate goal is to increase the number of farmers across the country who practice 4R nutrient management, and the eLearning portal is an invaluable tool toward achieving this.”

Safety and Security courses are also offered to fertilizer industry employees providing necessary tools and education required for product safety and stewardship.
