FAO and the International Fertilizer Association to cooperate on sustainable soil and crop nutrition management

Paris, France, 19 October 2016 – 19 October 2016, Rome - FAO and the International Fertilizer Association (IFA) today signed an agreement outlining a plan of action to promote soil health and sustainable fertilizer use globally.

The agreement was signed by FAO’s Director of Partnerships, Advocacy and Capacity Development Division, Marcela Villarreal, and IFA’s Director General Charlotte Hebebrand at a ceremony at FAO Headquarters in Rome during the week of FAO’S Committee on World Food Security (CFS).

The agreement builds and expands on long-lasting collaboration between the two institutions on fertilizer statistics, and encompasses joint efforts on three pillars: advocacy and awareness building, knowledge sharing and research.

“The agricultural sector faces complex challenges that require innovative partnerships to address them,” said Charlotte Hebebrand upon signing the MoU. “FAO is a key UN agency focusing on food, agriculture and nutrition, and IFA is delighted to partner with FAO on data, research and outreach on site- and soil specific plant nutrition for sustainable development.

“We look forward to collaborating with IFA on data and statistics, pursuing joint research and joint outreach activities at the global and regional level”, said Marcella Villarreal, Director of FAO's Partnerships, Advocacy and Capacity Development Division.

Healthy soils and sound plant nutrition are key to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals Agenda: they promote global food security by increasing agricultural productivity and improving rural livelihoods, and are also vital for reducing the environmental footprint of agriculture.
