Fertilizer nutrient consumption, by region, 1970/71 to 2000/01

Graph - Fertilizer consumption - OceaniaOceania

The use of phosphate fertilizers has traditionally predominated over that of other nutrients in Australia and New Zealand due to the requirement of the pastoral industry. However, this is steadily changing, especially in Australia, with the development of field crops. There has been a steady growth of fertilizer use, especially of nitrogen fertilizers, during the 1990s and, given normal seasonal conditions, this is expected to continue.
