| Fertilizer
nutrient consumption, by region, 1970/71 to 2000/01
Middle
East (inc. Egypt & Libya)
Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are the major
fertilizer consuming countries in the region.
In
Egypt, sufficient water and fertilizer availability and land
reclamation projects continue to have a positive impact on
fertilizer use. Fertilizer consumption is increasing steadily in
Iran. Fertilizer use in Turkey is favoured by population
pressures, land reclamation policies and, until last year,
policies favouring agriculture. However, in 2001 there was a
major economic crisis, subsidies were reduced or withdrawn,
credit availability was reduced and in addition the weather was
adverse. As a result, fertilizer use in Turkey fell by 20% in
2001 compared with 2000.
