| Fertilizer
nutrient consumption, by region, 1970/71 to 2000/01
Central
Europe
Poland accounts for about 45% of the region's total fertilizer
consumption, Romania for 12%, Hungary for 12% and the Czech
Republic for 10%.
During the 20 years up to 1980, fertilizer consumption in the
countries of Central Europe increased regularly and strongly.
Then, from 1980 to 1990, the consumption of all three nutrients
stabilized as optimum levels were reached. Total nutrient
consumption in the region fell from over 8 million tonnes in
1989 to about 3 Mt in 1993. Since then fertilizer consumption in
the region has fluctuated between 3.2 and 3.6 million tonnes
