| Introduction Fertilizers have been one of the most significant
inputs in Philippine agriculture. Their use has produced spectacular
yield increases, and enabled the country to attain self-sufficiency in
some important food and agro-industrial crops. Fertilizers have made
crop production possible in many unproductive soils.
The issue of efficient resource use is
relevant, because Philippine agriculture has reached the limit in
horizontal expansion. Moreover, we have to sustain productivity of soils
currently under production.
It is therefore considered useful to
prepare guidelines that can contribute to the development of
agricultural systems that are both environmentally and economically
sustainable.
