General

1. Who produces IFA Statistics?

a. The Production and International Trade Committee is mandated to collect and publish statistics that relate to global production, trade and capacity for a range of fertilizer products, intermediates and raw materials (for fertilizer consumption and/or industrial uses).
b. The Agriculture Committee collects statistics on fertilizer consumption on a nutrient basis and on a product basis, by region or by country. It also analyses data on fertilizer use by crop and on the market for specialty fertilizers.

IFADATA

1. Which products and countries are covered in IFADATA statistics?

a. Production, trade and consumption statistics are provided for the main consuming countries and cover the main fertilizer products.
b. Countries are regrouped in regions according to the UN country classification .

Page top

2. In what format are IFADATA statistics available

a. All IFADATA statistics are available in nutrient metric tonnes, on the basis of the nutrient content of each product. They are expressed in N, P2O5 and K2O.

I – IFADATA Production and Trade Statistics

3. What is included in the IFADATA production and trade figures?

a. For the production and trade statistics, IFA has tentatively been deducting tonnages dedicated to technical uses when information is available.
b. Production for some countries is apparent (consumption + export – import).

4. How production and trade data in IFADATA and PIT Online differ?

a. IFADATA provides these statistics for fertilizer uses only.
b. PIT Online data include gross production and trade statistics for all uses.

Page top

5. How are IFADATA production and trade statistics collected?

Production and trade data are mostly provided by correspondents and based on statistics provided by the Production and International Trade Committee.

6. What reference years are used for production and trade statistics?

All production and trade statistics are in calendar years (January to December).

II – IFADATA Consumption Statistics

7. What is included in the IFADATA fertilizer consumption figures?

a. Consumption statistics relate, to the extent possible, to real consumption. When real consumption is not available, apparent consumption figures (production + import – export) are given.

8. How are IFADATA consumption statistics collected?

a. Real consumption statistics are collected from correspondents in the main fertilizer-consuming countries,
b. Apparent consumption is calculated using production and trade figures from the Production and International Trade (PIT) Committee.
c. Consumption figures are finalized after consultation with partner organizations.

9. What reference years are used for consumption statistics?

About half of world fertilizer consumption is processed using calendar years (January to December; e.g. in China and Brazil), one third using statistics from July to June (e.g. in the European Union and the United States) and one sixth using statistics from April to March (e.g. in India).
As an example, consumption statistics referred to as 2008, are a blend of statistics in calendar years for 2008 and of statistics in 'fertilizer years' for 2008/09.

Raw Materials, Intermediates and Finished Products

1. Which products and countries are covered in production and trade statistics?

a. The annual statistics cover virtually all producing countries on a range of mainstream fertilizer products, intermediates and raw materials. The list of products is available in the publication schedule (reserved for IFA members only)

b. Trade statistics include total exports and imports of products (for all uses) by country. Countries are regrouped in regions according to the UN country classification .

2. In what format production and trade statistics are available?

a. All these statistics are available in nutrient metric tonnes, on the basis of the nutrient content of each product. Historically, all fertilizer statistics have been collected on a nutrient basis in order to conciliate the supply-related statistics with those of fertilizer consumption, which are usually available on a nutrient basis only.

b. In recent years, the production and trade figures have been available in product tonne basis in order to take into account the physical tonnage that is being traded. Each product has its respective conversion factor. The conversion factors are available in the following table.

c. Online PIT statistics of each product are detailed in two pages: “N” for Nutrient shows the data expressed in nutrient tonnes; and “P” for Product shows the same data expressed in “product tonnes”. It is possible to navigate between both pages and the related data by using the thumbnails.

3. What is included in the production and trade figures?

a. The production statistics comprise gross production in all forms and for all uses (fertilizer and industrial uses).
b. The trade statistics compile import and export tonnages for all uses. They don’t differentiate between fertilizer and industrial end-uses.

4. How IFA production and trade statistics are collected?

a. Production and trade statistics are usually collected directly from manufacturing companies. As regards trade, exports are provided by exporting companies. In a few cases, trade statistics are collected from national Customs statistics.

Fertilizer Use by Crop Statistics

1. Which crops and countries are covered?

a. Fertilizer use by crop statistics are split in 11 crop categories: wheat, rice, maize, other coarse grains, soybean, oil palm, other oilseeds, cotton, sugar crops, fruits and vegetables, and other crops.
b. Fertilizer use by crop statistics attempt to cover the main fertilizer-consuming countries.

2. In what format are the statistics available?

a. Fertilizer use by crop statistics are only available in nutrient metric tonnes. They are expressed in N, P2O5 and K2O.

Page top

3. What is included in the figures?

a. Fertilizer use by crop figures are given in volume and in percentage of total domestic consumption.
b. Total fertilizer consumption figures are, to the extent possible, the latest real consumption figures available.

Page top

4. How are the statistics collected?

a. Fertilizer use by crop statistics are collected through a network of correspondents and statistics published by some fertilizer associations.
b. When figures for some crops are not available, the IFA Secretariat develop what can be considered best guestimates.

Statistics on the Market for Specialty Fertilizers

1. Which crops and countries are covered?

a. Statistics on the market for specialty fertilizers cover the “specialty crop” (fruits, vegetables, ornamentals…) area, the irrigated area and the greenhouse area. They do not cover fertilizer consumption.
b. Statistics on the market for specialty fertilizers attempt to cover the main countries growing specialty crops.

Page top

2. In what format are the statistics available?

a. All statistics on the market for specialty fertilizers are expressed in hectares.

3. How are the statistics collected?

a. Crop figures come mostly from FAO, plus a few other sources for crops other than fruits and vegetables.
b. Statistics on the irrigated and greenhouse areas are collected from different publications.
