Zinc in Soils and Crop Nutrition

Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient but Zinc deficiency appears to be the most widespread and frequent micronutrient deficiency problem in crops worldwide particularly in countries such as India, China, Pakistan and Turkey where soils are low in available Zn, and cereals are the major source of calorie intake. It is, therefore, highly important to develop cost-effective and quick solutions to the Zn deficiency problem.

Efficiency of Soil and Fertilizer Phosphorus Use

The efficient use of phosphorus (P) is essential to many agricultural and environmental issues. These include maintaining or improving the P fertility of soils by the judicious use of P fertilizers and other sources of P, such as organic manures including animal manures, composts and biosolids.

Fertilizer Subsidy Situation in Selected Countries

Many countries recognize the importance of agriculture and the role fertilizers play in crop production. Fertilizers have been introduced in these countries with the aim to increase agricultural productivity and, ultimately, assure food security. In this context, a number of developing and transition economies have established fertilizer subsidy schemes to improve fertilizer supply, affordability and use, rebalance fertilization when and where needed, and sustain agricultural productivity.
