UNEP/IFA cooperation

IFA has enjoyed a rewarding relationship with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for many years. The Association takes the environmental responsibility of the industry seriously and seeks to promote positive change within the industry. Therefore IFA sees its role as a bridge between the industry and this key UN programme as essential for making coherent progress on environmental questions.

IFA's main point of contact is the Paris office of the UNEP Division of Technology, Industry and Economics. The Association also works with the main UNEP office, located in Nairobi.

Egil Myklebust, President and CEO of Norsk Hydro, and Michael Zammit Cutajar, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, were also present.

IFA attends the annual UNEP consultation with industry associations, normally held in Paris at the end of September.

IFA and UNEP have worked together on a series of publications to look at the environmental aspects of the fertilizer industry throughout the life cycle of the product. UNIDO also contributed to some of these publications.

In 1999, IFA contributed "Supplying plant nutrients for sustainable agriculture - life-cycle approaches in the fertilizer industry" to a special double issue of UNEP's Industry and Environment on "Sustainability and the agri-food industry".

In 2000, IFA signed the UNEP International Declaration on Cleaner Production and encouraged its members to adopt the principles laid out in that document.

IFA contributes to UNEP's Web Forum for Sustainable Agri-food Production and Consumption.

IFA prepared a case study for the forthcoming publication Catalysing Change: How Can Industry Associations Promote Sustainable Development? This publication gathers case studies from across business and industry and has been prepared in the light of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, to be held in South Africa in 2002.
