Global assessment
An assessment of the global situation regarding FBMPs was conducted by IFA where agricultural systems in different countries have been classified into four groups namely:
1. subsistence farming,
2. farming in transition, mixed with estate/plantation farming,
3. high-tech farming with mostly voluntary practices,
4. high-tech farming with substantial government intervention.
Obviously the type of FBMPs and their levels of adoption vary depending on the country category, as well as on the objectives of the implementors.
Among the benefits seen with the adoption of FBMPs are; increased economic benefits and productivity, optimizing the use of fertilizers by controlling losses, thereby improving fertilizer use efficiency, and a decrease in the negative impacts on the environment.
A. Krauss' Global assessment of the situation of fertilizer best management practices , provides a more detailed description of the assessment.
