Responsible and sustainable fertilizer production and use
Fertilizers are essential for the production of adequate quantities of food, feed, fibre and bioenergy. But that is no reason for the fertilizer industry to be complacent of the unintended consequences of its activities or related to the use of its products on the
people
and the
environment
.
The fertilizer industry is committed to reduce any possible negative impacts of fertilizer production and use on the environment. Manufacturers and industry associations are working together, sharing information and changing practices to achieve a cleaner, more efficient and sustainable fertilizer production.
The adoption of
Fertilizer Best Management Practices (FBMPs)
will contribute to the more efficient use of plant nutrients in order to control possible losses to the environment.
In addition, IFA has developed a series of
12 principles covering Safety, Health and the Environment
to be used in operations globally.
This section explains how the fertilizer industry relates to many of the issues preoccupying our stakeholders.
