Many countries recognize the importance of agriculture and the role fertilizers play in crop production. Fertilizers have been introduced in these countries with the aim to increase agricultural productivity and, ultimately, assure food security. In this context, a number of developing and transition economies have established fertilizer subsidy schemes to improve fertilizer supply, affordability and use, rebalance fertilization when and where needed, and sustain agricultural productivity.
